for now, from the university of denver i'm jim lehrer. thank you and good night. [ cheers and applause ] >> cenk: there you have it the first presidential debate of 2012. i have a feeling we have mixed feelings about how that debate went. of course you have to keep in mind we'll be discussing tactics here. we know all of the policies and facts that go behind us. some of the viewers might be experiencing those policies in substance for the first time and they might have a different take. now on to the tactics and how it appears, vice president gore? >> al gore: i said before the debate that i thought that romney was going to be a better performer tonight, because he knows how far behind he is and he had to bring his a game and i think he did. i don't think it was the best debate performance for president obama. i agree with you we'll have to see how the specifics on the substantive issues settle in as people reflect on them. but the first visceral reaction i had was that romney did himself some good in this debate. i'm strongly supporting

they have two minutes to respond to the question and then jim lehrer's going to narrate the back and forth. there should be enough time. >> one thing i want to say though is that this is going to be for a bunch of young americans their first chance to vote. a lot of the young americans didn't watch the conventions, they had summer vacation. now they're going to be tuning in. what i think they should be talking about is what are they going to do for young people? we have a jobs crisis in this country. we have kids graduating off a cliff every spring with no jobs, huge debt. and romney unfortunately when he was governor of massachusetts actually devastated financial aid for young people trying to go to college. college went up 65%, cost of college 65% under romney as governor, tuition help went down. those -- >> well, college costs have gone up 25% under president obama. what i find so interesting about all the conversation about ryan's budget i hope that jim lehrer and all the media who are watching and commenting on this debate expect the same level of specificity from president obam

chris, your last thoughts before we go to jim lehrer on the debate stage tonight with these two candidates? >> it's probably going to get down to, who do you like? it's as simple as that tonight. after all the talk, who do you like? >> i have to tell you that i think that the format tonight is going to be important. we are not expecting to hear a lot of cheering from this audience. it is not set up for that to be the expectation. we are not going to have buzzers. we are not going to have rigid time limits. it's going to be divided into sort of 15-minute chunks with these candidates. it is going to focus, they say, almost entirely on domestic policy. there's going to be specific time for health care. but this format gives these gentleman a chance to spread out a little bit. as these men have campaigned for the office and in mr. obama's case, held the office over these last four years, they have talked a lot about each other. but they have not faced each other, man to man, person to person, face to face, on the same stage, as far as i can tell, in eight years. the last time i have a record o
